You or the pedestrian: Ethics of autonomous cars making emergency decisions to save lives

As autonomous vehicles start to become a presence on our roadways, above and beyond the engineering challenges, it is important to resolve the ethical dilemmas of control. Should the vehicle hit a wall, possibly injuring or killing it's owner to avoid a pedestrian, or place the safety of its passengers at the top priority Should it weigh the safety of each vehicle around it, with a contingency plan for which direction to swerve if confronted with a collision scenario: hit the volvo because it's the most safe? These are important and unanswered questions that will shape the future of tranpsortation.
