A new review of past research suggests any talking while driving threatens safety

A new review of the last quarter century of research on driving distractions claims that talking while driving, whether on a phone or with a passenger, undermines road safety. Researchers found that drivers who talk are less safe than quiet drivers. "...there is more to distraction than just visual attention. It is important to know that distraction occurs whenever drivers take their mind off the road," says Sarah Simmons, a Ph.D. candidate in Psychology at the University of Calgary in Canada and co-author of the study.
